Samsung launches the Gear IconX (2018) in India

Samsung announced the original Gear IconX back in 2016 as the first truly-wireless earbuds from the company’s stable. Addressing some of the user complaints, the company released a successor, the Gear IconX (2018), in August last year. More than ten months after the official unveiling, Samsung has now finally launched its ‘latest’ earbuds in India.

The model launched in India today is no different from what is sold in other markets already. You can read the Gear IconX (2018) specifications below to learn what it brings to the table in terms of hardware. The Indian version should also include all the new features and improvements Samsung made via a major software update in April this year.

Available only in Black

To recap, apart from sporting a lightweight, ergonomic, and truly-wireless design, the latest Gear IconX also comes with a long list of features such as support for Bixby, handling calls, reading out notifications, activity tracking, fitness coaching, built-in storage for music, etc. The earbuds support fast-charging if the improved battery life falls short of your expectations. The Gear IconX case can also charge the earbuds with its built-in battery.

If any of this functionality interests you, the Gear IconX (2018) is already available for purchase in India on Samsung website, Flipkart, and at other major retailers for Rs.13,990 (~$200). Unfortunately, Samsung is offering only the Black color option in India, while customers in other markets have Pink and Gray color options as well.

In FY2018 (ending March 2019), Epson will further accelerate the shift from conventional ink cartridge models to high-capacity ink tank models with the aim of establishing the latter as the inkjet printer mainstream. In both emerging and advanced economies, the company will also continue to promote the replacement of laser printers with high-capacity ink tank inkjet printers by enhancing its lineup with products with overwhelming cost performance and enhanced easy-of-use. Through these efforts, Epson plans to sell 9.5 million high-capacity ink tank products in FY2018 – an increase of 20% compared to the previous fiscal year. This is expected to account for about 55% of total Epson inkjet printer sales.

Koichi Kubota, Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, Printing Solutions Operations Division of Seiko Epson commented, “High-capacity ink tank inkjet printers have a low environmental footprint, have lower running costs, and allow users to print freely and with less effort compared to laser printers and ink cartridge printers. Epson has transformed the printer business model, and will continue to provide comfortable printing environments that allow our customers around the world to demonstrate their creativity and enjoy high productivity.”

Smartwatches and other accessories face looming threat of new Chinese-import tariffs

The world of international commerce is a complicated one, and the particular path a product takes as it evolves from raw materials, to discrete components, to a final, assembled gadget can have a big impact on what it ends up costing. Right now, shoppers in the U.S. are concerned about what impact new tariffs on Chinese imports might have on all manner of consumer goods, from cars to portable electronics. Now some newly published rulings spell out exactly what what kinds of gadgets we may be about to see become slightly more expensive.

When we last checked in with President Trump’s plans for tariffs, there was concern that levies against fully assembled smartphones would bump up prices here in the States. Over the past few months, though, the scope of these tariffs has shifted, and Trump has reassured phone-makers like Apple that their handsets won’t be targeted.

But that still leaves a lot of other product types vulnerable to these new fees, and as companies try to work out just where they’re going to be hit (it’s a complicated question, with over 6,000 defined product types covered by the latest tariff proposal), they’re asking U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials to make some rulings. Those have revealed that products like the Apple Watch, several FitBit activity trackers, and a number of Sonos speakers are all likely to be affected by the tariffs, should they go through.

That would end up costing the companies behind these devices an extra 10 percent to import their wares. The accessory market is already very competitive, and even a modest new cost like that could threaten to have a serious impact on revenue streams.

These proposed tariffs aren’t set in stone, though, and there’s still time for companies to lobby for certain categories to be excluded. Failing that, there’s the distant possibility that a product could be reclassified under another (non-tariffed) category, or even granted a specific exemption.

Still, don’t be surprised if things like smartwatch prices are slightly higher this holiday season. Maybe it’s time to get an early start on your shopping?
