Report claims Apple HomePod to Account for 6 Percent Smart Speaker Market

Apple HomePod might be known for its premium features, but according to a new research done by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), the speaker has only managed to acquire about 6 percent of the market share in the smart speaker industry, which is said to hold about 50 million units by the end of June. In comparison, Amazon and Google are way ahead of Apple, with about 70 percent and 24 percent of the market share respectively.



To be fair, Apple did only launch the HomePod in February this year, which is almost two years after Amazon launched its first Alexa-powered Echo speaker. However, that’s not the only reason why Apple’s smart speaker is performing poorly in the market. According to Josh Lowitz, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP, the fact that the company only offers one speaker priced at the premium $349 (approximately Rs 24,000) is also a big reason for it to fall behind its competition in the smart speaker space.

In comparison, both Google and Amazon offer a range of speakers at a variety of price points. There are Google Home Mini and Amazon Echo Dot, both of which are priced close to around $50 (approximately Rs 3,400). Not just that, both companies are also focusing on selling more than one speaker to customers. The report claims that about 34 percent of Amazon Echo users and 31 percent of Google Home users own more than one smart speaker.



Not just that, about 10 percent of Echo speaker owners have stated to have more than three speakers at home. The report states that having low-cost speakers in the assortment is a very good strategy, as it encourages the customer to try the device and further get comfortable with the concept, which leads to buying more speakers for every room in the house.

That said, recent reports have suggested Apple be working on a low-priced HomePod speaker, which is touted to be priced around $150 (approximately Rs 10,300). On the side, Apple is also focusing on improving the functionality of its speaker to be on par with the competition. A report suggests that Apple is currently working on a new software for HomePod that could add features like phone calling and multiple timers

Nikon announced the new Nikon Coolpix P1000, its latest compact camera in India. The successor to the Nikon P900, the P1000 is equipped with a massive 125x optical zoom lens allowing users to capture enhanced zoom scenario like wildlife photography. The new Nikon Coolpix camera can record 4K UHD video at 30 frames per second.

“Frames from movies recorded in 4K UHD format can also be saved as still images,” the company notes. It is also capable of recording Super lapse and time-lapse movies. Nikon Coolpix P1000 features a 16MP, 1/2.3-inch sensor and has an ISO range of 100 to 6400. The 125× optical zoom lens covers a range of focal length beginning at the wide-angle 24mm equivalent and extending to the super-telephoto 3000mm1 equivalent The camera provide up to 250× zoom when Dynamic Fine Zoom is enabled with a 6000mm equivalent.

The camera is equipped with an enhanced Expeed image-processing engine and Dual Detect Optical VR to provide a level of vibration reduction equivalent to a 5.0-stop increase in shutter speed. The Coolpix P1000 include a 2359k-dot (approximately) OLED electronic viewfinder and equips a 3.2-inch TFT LCD monitor. The camera is also equipped with an accessory terminal and supports a wide variety of accessories, including external Speedlights.

Nikon has not shared any detail regarding the price and availability of the new Nikon Coolpix P1000 in India, however, The Verge cites that the camera is priced at $999 (roughly Rs 68,580).

Xiaomi’s Huami enters India, launches Amazfit Bip and Stratos Watch



The cheaper Amazfit Bip features a 1.28-inch trans-reflective always-on coloured screen of resolution 176 x 176 pixels and is designed with a 2.5G curved Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The watch is compatible with iOS and Android devices and can be paired with either using the Mi Fit 3.0 app.

Xiaomi-owned Huami wearable brand just entered the Indian market and have brought with it, the Amazfit Bip and Amazfit Stratos, both of which come with built-in GPS, activity tracking and a head rate monitor. The cheapest of the two is the Amazfit Bip at Rs 5,499 while the Amazfit Stratos will be sold for an asking price of Rs 15,999. Both smartwatches will be exclusively available through Flipkart and are currently selling at no-cost EMI offers of 3-9 months.

Affordability aside, the Amazfit Bip features a 1.28-inch trans-reflective always-on coloured screen of resolution 176 x 176 pixels and is designed with a 2.5G curved Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The Stratos is powered by a dual-core SoC which clocks in at 1.2GHz and is paired with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The watch can be connected to iOS or Android devices through its Bluetooth 4.0 LE connectivity and users can view their activity data through the Mi Fit app on their phone.



The Amazfit Stratos comes backed by a larger 290mAh battery which will last you to up to 5 days on a single charge and up to 35 hours when the GPS is turned on. Weighing in on the heavier side at 70 grams, the Stratos comes with even more features and will allow you to interact and view your notifications, emails, calls right within the watch screen. The smartwatch has a 5ATM or 50-meter water resistance rating meaning the Stratos can be worn during swimming as well as running, walking, cycling and other activities.

Google Unveils Titan Security Key in Bluetooth and USB Models to Protect Against Phishing

Google at its cloud computing-focused Cloud Next 2018 has unveiled the Titan Security Key as its native FIDO-compatible security key to protect enterprise customers against online attacks. The latest development comes just after it was reported that the use of physical security keys helped over 85,000 Google employees prevent phishing attacks for over a year. The Titan Security Key is initially available to Google Cloud customers, though it will also go on sale for the masses through the Google Store in the coming future. It takes on the offerings by Yubico that are already protecting the experience on Gmail and other web services.

The Titan Security Key comes in two variants; while one supports Bluetooth and NFC to enable 2FA (two-factor authentication) for mobile devices, the other variant comes with a standard USB port to enable protection on PCs and notebooks. Both feature a security element that includes a firmware developed by Google to verify the key’s integrity. “We’ve long advocated the use of security keys as the strongest, most phishing-resistant authentication factor for high-value users, especially cloud admins, to protect against the potentially damaging consequences of credential theft,” writes Google Cloud’s Product Management Director Jennifer Lin in a blog post. “Titan Security Key gives you even more peace of mind that your accounts are protected, with assurance from Google of the integrity of the physical key.”

With the launch of the Titan Security Key, Google has eventually entered the market of security keys and once again prompted U2F (Universal 2nd Factor) that comes as an upgrade to the traditional 2FA. The company led by Sundar Pichai already adopted security keys internally that recently found to have helped not just tens or hundreds but over 85,000 employees. Likewise, the use of security keys on services such as Gmail and Google Drive isn’t new, as companies such as Yubico are already offering their in-house solutions for major Google services. A support page by the company also hints at the ongoing plans to boost the usage of security keys in order to protect enterprise customers from targeted online attacks.

Apart from confirming its interest towards security keys, Google at Cloud Next announced its Edge TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) that comes as a purpose-built ASIC chip to run TensorFlow Lite models. It helps connected sensors make real-time, intelligent decisions locally, “at the edge” – without requiring an additional resource. There is also a software stack called Cloud IoT Edge that extends Google Cloud’s powerful AI capability to gateways and connected devices and let developers build and train machine learning models in the cloud.

Enabling developers to start building their solutions using the Edge TPU, Google is set to offer a development kit that will include the Edge TPU, NXP CPU, Microchip secure element, and Wi-Fi antenna. It will be available to dlopers starting this October. A dedicated Google form has been created to sign up for early access.
